Many thanks Jack. Exactly, delineating the problem we're so causally labeling. The recent article (in NYT I think - it all becomes a raging content stream after a while ) on calling everything "trauma" both minimizes what trauma really is, and leave us all feeling victims. Further, it doesn't get us anywhere in terms of a helpful antidote to reduce real trauma.
Kernan, this was a great video! You have awesome on-screen presence. I really enjoyed listening to your approach to the upcoming pieces you'll be sharing on burnout. I know about the topic from a psychology perspective but am fascinated to hear more from a physician perspective. Really looking forward to seeing how you use all the Substack tools in the coming days and weeks!
Thanks for watching Sara. Definitely a work in progress! I'm still trying to figure out what's the best place for my scattered articles NOT related to the core Physician Interrupted thrust, e.g. observations about the societal mess we've become, whistleblowing, etc.
Thx Shelby. I've been thinking of how to incorporate video. It appears it'll be best as a component of the article posts, instead of having a jpeg, it'll have the video. I'll probably still keep the video itself short but keep the articles at the length they need to be, 15-30 minutes read time.
This is a great overview Kernan. The visual concept of distress matrix resonates a lot to my own experience. Grateful for your work and advocacy!
The clear and concise definition of a burnout followed by its general categories of causality is really helpful.
thnx for reading it. There's lots of loose talk about burnout. But part of the problem is the vagueness of the definition itself.
This is fantastic. Slowing down and coming back to a definition, what the things we talk about actually mean, is so crucially important.
Without accuracy in our language and preciseness of speech, we have no hope in designing solutions.

I really enjoyed learning more about burnout. I think the video and article formats complement each other—I learned something from both!
